USG is surely going to Ames, Iowa when we get to the midwest. It's thirty miles north of Des Moines and known as a progressive, friendly city. Ames is home to Iowa State and the thriving community has over thirty thousand students and features more than three dozen parks and more than 50 miles of hard-surface shared use trails. Our new friend Lindsay sent us this tip:
"Ames, Iowa has a great local food scene and two of my favorite places are Onion Creek Farm and Lacewing Acres. Onion Creek Farm also has a guesthouse for out of town guests. Great local farmers market right down town and lots going on with the Iowa State Sustainable Ag program."
Pictured above is the garlic harvest at Onion Creek. (We've already harvested our garlic this year and planted acorn and butternut squash seeds where the garlic was.)
When y'all are traveling near or through Ames, for a real farm experience, you can stay in the guest house at Onion Creek. Also try and check out the Lacewing Acres CSA. They have a passionate following on Facebook.

See you in Iowa! I drove through Iowa on a road trip to Oregon when I was a college student. The memories of the beautiful, green, rolling hills linger still today.
